and the First to Be Ignored
Seamless gutters, downspouts and guards. Where a roof puts its water is a design decision — and during a South Florida downpour, the consequences of getting it wrong are visible from the driveway.

A roof does not finish at the edge
Everything the roof sheds has to end up somewhere. Where it ends up is either planned or it is not, and the difference shows over years rather than days.
What uncontrolled roof water does
- Erodes the ground along the drip line, cutting a trench that then channels water back toward the building.
- Splashes soil and organic material up the wall, leaving staining that gets blamed on the paint.
- Saturates the ground next to the foundation repeatedly, which is the slow, expensive version of this problem.
- Keeps walkways and driveways permanently wet under the roof line, which is a slip and an algae problem.
- Drowns planting beds directly beneath the eave while leaving everything else dry.
- Runs behind the fascia when the roof edge is not detailed to prevent it, rotting the timber the gutter is meant to hang from.
Why the volume is the problem here
South Florida does not get gentle rain spread over a day. It gets very large amounts of water in short bursts, several times a week through the wet season.
A gutter system that copes with light rain and overflows in a real storm is not doing its job, because the storms are when it matters. Sizing and downspout count follow the heavy case, not the average one.
The same applies to how many downspouts a long run needs. A single outlet at one end of a fifty-foot gutter is a common inherited arrangement, and it is the reason water comes over the front edge halfway along.
Formed on site, in one piece per run
Sectional gutter comes in fixed lengths and gets joined every few feet. Every one of those joints is a place that can separate, and in Florida heat the expansion and contraction cycle works on them constantly.
Seamless gutter is rolled from a coil of aluminium on site, cut to the exact length of the run. A thirty-foot elevation gets a thirty-foot gutter with no joints in it at all. Corners and downspout outlets are still connections, and they get proper attention because they are now the only ones.
What gets decided per run
- Profile — the shape of the trough and how it reads against the fascia and trim
- Size — set by the roof area draining into it, not by what was there before
- Slope — enough fall to the outlet to keep water moving, little enough not to be visible
- Hanger spacing — closer than most inherited installations, so the run does not sag under load
- Colour — matched to the fascia, the trim or the roof, depending on which you want it to disappear into
Getting water off the roof is half the job. Getting it away from the house is the other half.
Downspout placement is the part most often inherited from whoever was there before and most worth revisiting.
How many, based on the roof above
Each downspout drains a finite roof area. We work from the actual planes feeding each run rather than adding one per corner out of habit. Long runs and large planes need more outlets, and this is the most common reason an existing gutter overflows.
Where they land
A downspout that discharges onto a walkway makes it permanently wet. One that lands on a driveway you park on is an inconvenience. One that discharges into a bed against the wall is putting water exactly where you least want it. All of this is avoidable at planning stage.
Where they sit on the elevation
Downspouts are visible. Running them at corners and behind planting, and matching them to the wall or trim colour, is the difference between drainage you notice and drainage you do not. Function comes first, but appearance is not an afterthought.
What happens at the bottom
Discharging at the base of the wall moves the problem two feet rather than solving it. Extensions, splash blocks or a connection into existing site drainage carry water properly clear of the foundation. We will tell you what your ground conditions call for.
Useful under trees. Unnecessary in the open.
Guard mesh fitted over the trough keeps leaves, palm fronds, seed pods and windblown debris out while letting water through. We have installed them — there is a gutter guard integration in our own portfolio, fitted along a metal roof edge.
What they do is reduce how often the gutters need clearing. What they do not do is remove the need entirely. Fine debris and organic silt still get through and still accumulate, and the guard itself needs to be kept clear on top.
Worth it when
- Mature oaks, palms or other heavy shedders overhang the roof
- The gutter run is genuinely difficult or unsafe to access
- You have already had overflow traced back to blockage more than once
Probably not worth it when
- The elevation is open with nothing overhanging
- The gutters are easy to reach and get cleared anyway
- The real problem is undersized gutters or too few downspouts
Best observed during heavy rain
Most gutter problems are invisible in dry weather. If you can safely watch the house during a downpour, you will learn more in five minutes than from any inspection of a dry gutter.
Water pouring over the front edge
The gutter is undersized, blocked, or draining into too few downspouts for the roof above it.
Water running down behind the gutter
Usually a drip edge issue at the roof rather than the gutter itself — and it rots fascia quietly.
Visible sag along a run
Hangers are too far apart or have pulled out. The low point becomes a standing pool and adds weight.
Plants growing in the gutter
Organic material has built up enough to hold soil and moisture. The run is not draining.
Staining down the exterior wall
A line of discolouration below a joint or corner marks where water has been escaping repeatedly.
Erosion or a trench along the drip line
Water is leaving the roof without being caught at all, and it is working on the ground beside the house.
Soft or discoloured fascia
The timber the gutter hangs from has been wet for a long time. This gets worse and takes the gutter with it.
Separated joints on sectional gutter
Every joint on an old sectional system is a candidate. When one goes, others usually follow.
How a gutter replacement runs
Usually a considerably shorter job than roofing work, and the sequence still matters.
Measure the roof, not the old gutter
Run lengths, the roof area feeding each one, and where water needs to end up. If the existing arrangement was undersized, copying it would repeat the problem.
Old gutters down, fascia checked
With the gutter off we can see the fascia and drip edge behind it. Soft or rotten timber is photographed and shown to you — hanging new gutter on failed fascia is not something we will do.
Gutter rolled to length on site
Each run is formed in one continuous piece from the coil, so the finished run has no joints along its length.
Hung with fall, corners and outlets sealed
Hangers set at spacing that carries a full gutter, subtle fall toward each outlet, corners and outlets detailed properly since they are the only connections left.
Routed, secured and discharged clear
Downspouts run to the agreed positions, fixed to the wall, and terminated so water is carried away from the foundation rather than dropped beside it.
Water tested and walked with you
Runs are flushed to confirm fall and that outlets carry the flow. Old gutter and debris removed, and the property walked with you before we leave.
The gutter and the roof edge are one detail
The drip edge is the piece of metal at the bottom of the roof that carries water past the fascia and into the trough. If it is missing, short or fitted the wrong way relative to the gutter, water will run behind the gutter no matter how good the gutter is.
This is why gutter and roof work are worth coordinating. When we replace a roof, the drip edge and the gutter line are set out together. When we replace gutters on an existing roof, the drip edge is the first thing we look at.
It also runs the other way. A gutter fitted too high can interfere with the roof covering above it; one fitted too low will miss water coming off a steep plane in a heavy storm. The right position depends on the pitch, and it is worth getting right once.
A note on fascia
Gutters hang from fascia, and fascia is the part of the exterior most likely to have been quietly rotting behind a failing gutter for years.
We check it as a matter of course when the old gutter comes off and show you what is there. Repairs to it are identified before the new gutter goes up, not discovered afterwards.

What homeowners ask about drainage
Not every elevation of every house does. But South Florida rain arrives in short, extremely heavy bursts, which means a lot of water leaves the roof in a very short time. Without somewhere planned for it to go, it lands in a line along the drip edge — against the wall, over the walkway, into the beds. Whether that matters depends on what is below the roof edge, which is a question we answer at the property rather than in general.
The gutter is formed on site from a single coil of aluminium, in one continuous length for each run, rather than assembled from sectional pieces joined every few feet. Joints are where gutters leak, so removing them from the run removes most of the failure points. Corners and outlets are still joined, and those are detailed deliberately.
By roof area first — each downspout can only carry so much, so a large or steep roof plane needs more of them. Then by what is below: we would rather not discharge onto a walkway, a driveway you park on, an air conditioning unit or a bed that will erode. Appearance comes third, but it is not ignored — a downspout in the middle of a front elevation is worth avoiding if the drainage allows.
They reduce how often gutters need clearing; they do not eliminate it. Under heavy tree cover — oaks and palms in particular — they earn their place. On an open elevation with nothing overhanging, they often do not. We have installed them and we will tell you which situation your roof is in rather than adding them by default.
Yes, and it is common. What is worth knowing is that the gutter attaches to the fascia and sits under the drip edge, so if the roof is due for replacement soon it is usually more efficient to do both together — the drip edge and the gutter line get set up as one system rather than one being worked around the other.
Usually a drip edge problem rather than a gutter problem. If the metal at the roof edge does not carry water past the fascia and into the trough, water follows the underside of the edge and runs down the back. That is a detail at the roof, and patching the gutter will not fix it.
